Wow! They just invented... er, the Alfa Multi-Air system.
It sounds pretty cool, but watch as you never, ever hear of this again. Or the other interesting things linked on that page (the 2/4 stroke "hybrid", storing regerative-brake energy with compressed air tanks, etc).
(Wouldn't it be CBF / Innova / SH Lead with 300mpg anyway, as this uses an injection system? )
Combine all of the above, and run it on biodiesel, for incredible parsinomy.
BTW G, what speed was that Citroen cruising at on it's incredible journey? I would hope a current small diesel could match it (other than the Smart, of course) - my dad's JTD Panda has a lifetime economy of 68mpg, between city and 60mph-ish motorway trundles. Stick it at a flat 40 or 50mph and it could well clear three figures. However a typical chunky American car, doing that on their lacklustre petrol (93 RON is hot stuff to them) and making 100 miles to a short gallon is worthy of note if it's true. |

Chunky in weight possibly - but certainly not aerodynamics and you'll note from the original link that their new car had to do 50mph to get that figure. I don't see any details about the speed of the citreon on wikipedia, I presume it wasn't going flat out, though . |

I am going to have to look into that sort of engine, because to make energy from being cooled (i.e energy leaving the engine) sounds like it is breaking laws of thermodynamics, the major one being, you can't get something for nothing . |

Rubbish. That's a definition of a perpetual motion machine. All engines require some kind of energy source. Whether it's a candle heating the "hot" end of it, or some kind of refridgerator cooling the other. Even if you put one side inside a warm, insulated house, and the other out in the snow, it will work by funnelling heat energy out of the house and into the environment. A bit like a waterwheel, except it runs by leeching off the conduction of heat energy rather than the force of gravity on a fluid. A waterwheel isn't a "no energy input"/"no fuel" device either - basically, it's using the nuclear furnace of the sun as fuel in a very roundabout fashion, and subtly slows the water flow it removes the energy from.
I can see it being very efficient (stirling engines are supposed to be - but we're currently trying, as we have been since at least the 70s, to leap the hurdle of making them produce useful amounts rather than being a toy), or even a handy way of running a fridge in Sweden, but it's still going to use energy. And it's still external combustion, which means if you try to make it run at a useful speed by directly heating one side (or cooling it, which usually involves heat generated/dumped *somewhere*) you're unavoidably losing some of the source heat to the environment before it even has a chance to do useful work - though you don't have as much reciprocating loss or air pumping issues - as opposed to an ICE where it's all contained during the work phase (instead being lost from conductive heating of the block, as exhaust, etc) and the losses come from friction, piston inertia, air pumping friction etc instead.
The main "useful" application i've seen so far for a stirling engine is to power Sosuke's boat in Ponyo... and that was only a bath toy 'til it was magically transformed... |
