I've heard about 35-40bhp for the 250 and 45-50bhp for the 300.
The earlier 300 is a bit torquier but just as mad as the 250. The newer 300s are meant to be gruntier low down and not so much the top end rush.

The 300 is basically a big-bore 250. I believe in 2007 the 300 got electric start, though it is retro-fittable on to the same model 250s I think.
Unless you're worried by competition categories, I'd go for the 300 for the extra flexibility it offers.

What I've read suggests that the peak power tends to be about the same, but that the bigger capacity is there to beef up midrange, so making it a bit easier to ride generally.

boundy and I were talking about the electric starts the other day, supposedly they have had a lot of problems with the lecky start on the 2-smokes ... Neutral

I'd go for the 300 as there is 'no replacement for displacement' ... AKA low down grunt will be better on the 300!! Cool .. and that is more what you are after, not outright power ... Thumbs Up

Yea, there definitely were some questions over reliability of the early 2 stroke electric starters. However, I think there's also a decent number of work-arounds for the problems listed too.
If just used when needed (ie half way up a hill getting on the bike from the wrong side), I think you're less likely to have trouble than if using them all the time.
