My general feeling is that people on the forum are pretty thick-skinned and good at robustly calling it out. Repeated peer pressure and challenge stands a chance of making people question their ingrained views. After all, most of them presumably joined because they feel some sort of connection to our community.

Rather than immediately banning them, causing them to harbour resentment about being "denied a voice" and retreating into an echo chamber with others with the same view, they can be shown their oppinion is not widely shared in the community they feel an affinity to.

I offered to ban him, partly tongue in cheek, partly to make a point about what I personally think of the views he has expressed and partly because some people realise on some level that they should stop posting and can't help themselves. It's not unusual for people to request to be banned from the forum. I suppose it's a bit like gambling addicts requesting a ban from online bookmakers.

No loss to BCF in my view.
