I'm looking to do my CBT in the next week or so but having looked at my licence I only have entitlement for:

B
B1
and provisional f, k, p

I'm almost certain that you need provisional A or A1 in order to ride a bike. Would I need this "activating" by the DVLA?

Just been having a look on the DVLA website and apparently I have to send off my licence and pay them £38!

Somebody somewhere is making a lot of money out of us motorists. £38 to type a single letter onto a piece of plastic and a piece of paper Mad

Look on your paper counterpart, 'A' may be listed under "Provisional Entitlement".

This is probably the case. On new-ish full licences they are not displayed on the card.
This also confused my instructor when I did CBT on sunday as he was quiet new.
As has already been said (which means my post is pointless Rolling Eyes ) look on your paper counterpart and not on the back of your card.

Not necessarily. I have both parts in-front of me and on the back of my card it lists
B, B1, f k p

My paper counterpart lists A, BE, GH under 'Provisional Entitlement'
None of the above are on my card so the likelihood is your looking at the card not the paper counterpart.
Hope this clears up any confusion

I thought the card only listed the full licences you held?

My card only lists the full entitlements, for the provisional I have to look on the paper counterpart.

f,k,p are in italics on my licence which i presume indicates provisional?
B and B1 are in normal type which I guess means I have these entitlements.
My provisional motorcycle entitlement A isn't even listed on my card, only on my paper licence.

f, k and p must be full then since the card only lists full licences.

Your may be correct, i'm not sure what they are as I don't have the booklet that tells you.
Either way, if they are on your card licence then A is probably on your paper licence..
And all these posts are a waste of time if he's already checked both Smile

If you've got A it will be on the paper part. Since he's got a full car it might have a full moped licence too. Cant remember when they stopped doing it.

As far as I remember P is what you're after.

Sorry if it's been answered, I couldn't be bothered to read through the posts as I'm in a rush!

'A1' is a 'light motorcycle licence' meaning you can ride a 125cc or less with no L's on,
and 'A' allows you to ride a bike above 125cc (taking into account 33bhp restriction etc.)

From the dvla website.

Not sure what P is but on the back of my licence it says you can have it at 16, so i presume its a ped thing.

The way I understood it was that P was for moped's etc at 16 then A1 was at 17 for a bike up to 14bhp. Although I thought for A1 you needed to take the 125 test that entitles you to ride 125's without L plates (can't remember the exact name of the test)

I may and probably am wrong though! Oh well sue me Razz

James

Edit: To do a cbt You only need P which I'm certain of, but you have to do it on a moped! It doesn't matter what vehicle you do it on; I did it on a moped then took my test on a 125 without re-doing the cbt on a geared bike.

Hairy muff.

Not much point in doing a CBT if you're not going to pass your full test though.

If you are then shame on you ped boi!

I am about to take my theory test before I take my DAS in a few weeks. I have a full car license from 1998, I have my CBT, do I need to apply for a provisional bike license or will my car license cover this?
Cheers

Nope he will have moped entitlement which is all he would need to do his CBT. Razz

Just check the paper part of the licence and look for A category.
