I'd been out in the Peaks with (very occasional) poster Mare today and was directly behind a 206 when it crashed fairly spectacularly... It went to overtake a bus at a bus stop on the A57 behind another car but bailed out when she saw something coming the other way - brakes screeched, cue much crunching.
I've never seen an actual crash happen before and given the force of the impact I was amazed the two girls walked away from it. We hung around to give a statement to the police and was pretty unimpressed that it took them half an hour to turn up... at least the ambulance and fire brigade were a bit quicker.

nasty enough, its scary just how little speed it takes to damage a car so much.

I'm not sure they would have been overly impressed with me sticking a camera in their faces when they were still shitting themselves... Smile Anyway, they were strapped on to spinal boards by the understandably cautious paramedics before long.
In terms of the amount of damage, I reckon she was maybe doing 30 when she hit the back - imagine the same thing at 60 or 80 or 100? Sick Hardly bears thinking about. Was slightly concerning that none of the airbags went off too, I guess the impact was too high for all the sensors.

common misconception about airbags that.

fact is most systems won't activate at all at impact speed below 35mph.

the crash and g sensors take in to account angle of impact, speed and actual force before deciding to deploy any bag

modern multi bag systems will only deploy the relevent bag (side impact, side bags only) and can also alter the timing of deployment based on all factors.

Looking at the photos the impact was to the nearside front and taking in to account your sub 30mph estimated speed, It's not surprising the airbags did not deploy, instead the crumple zones have absorbed most of the impact force.

Cheers

I don't think it was deliberate, to be fair Smile

- car in front goes to overtake bus
- 206 follows
- car in front pulls back in
- car coming the other way, probably not spotting the 206, continues in their direction
- 206 spots car in their path, tries to pull back in/stop
- crunch Smile

I would have agreed but I was talking to someone on the bus and since the driver had stuck the handbrake on, all they heard was a major thud and didn't move an inch!

Couldn't agree more. She was a total berk for going for it, even I could see from 100 yards back what was going to happen...

But even a diesel 206 is quicker than a Golf Mk2 'CL'......over weight and under powered.

I saw a TDI 206 run in the mid 14's over the 1/4 at York, very impressive.
Faster than the shitty Ford RS Turd boys.

Not suprised the airbags didn't deploy, the peugeot basically acted as an over-sized door wedge.

That probably gave you a better view of the road ahead, her vision was probably blocked by the bus & the car infront.

Bet the bus passengers were pissed off.

A car was involved in an accident with a bus in Glodwick, near me.
The driver said he had about 10-15 passengers at the time, but within a week over 50 people were claiming to have been on the bus.
For anyone that doesn't know,Glodwick is a mainly asian area in Oldham. Another good excuse of Muslim honesty at work eh....... Sad

It was right on the Sheffield/Derbyshire border, if you were heading from Ladybower towards Sheffield. You pass the left turn for Strines Moor going up the hill, then the road levels off, it was about 100 yards on from there where there is a bus stop on the left.

The bus passengers weren't overly impressed, they were still waiting for the replacement bus an hour after it happened (when I left).

I certainly had a better view, but that's sort of the point Smile On a fast A-road it was a bit mad to go for it with no view whatsoever of what might have been coming with other way.

You're a winner! Smile Passenger was from Sheffield, driver was only visiting.
Me & Mare had parked our bikes a little way back from the scene with our hazards on, and to be honest I was a little bit worried someone was going to come steaming up the hill into them...! Fortunately all was ok until the services arrived with their economy-strength blue lights Smile
