im think im being made redundant!!! at 17 + the reason isnt because of anything ive done Sad

the job is part time but get £70+ a week and helps run the bike etc.

for you that dont know i work as a lifeguard at a hotel, small pool and not all that busy, near my GFs so combine work with seeing her so i dont spend all my money on fuel for bike and also college is near.

However, a massive part of the system (filtration) had gone and going to cost £££££'s to fix (thousands) I am on holiday pay at the moment but they will tell me in the next few days if they are going to pay the bill or if im out of a job.

The worse bit is, as im part time i dont have a contact so cant really get any compensation or anything Brick Wall

so, just wundering if anyone knows if im entitled to anything (although no contact) and what else could i do a part-time in?

i REALLY dont want to work in catering as i did to 2 years and hated it by the end or in a supermarket, would love a job in a motorbike shop and will apply but i think the chances are slim...

the worse bit is, if i do i havnt paid all my insurance off yet so will be in the sh*t big time Thumbs Down

Doubt you'd be able to claim anything. I'd start looking for new jobs while your waiting. Thumbs Up

Actully this could be an option, i need to last under 5 month (would get a summer job aswell though) Thumbs Up

i get a bit of money each week at the moment which is just enought to run the bike (nothing else though Sad ) then get a full time summer job as ill need somthing to do anyways.

My friend is going to try and get me some casual lifeguard work where he works so hope i could have a bit extra,

would still rather have my job...

Done working in catering... hated it. Currently working in a supermarket and hate it even more, managers are all c*nts (one who particually has a problem with me and the other young lad on our department gives us random searches EVERY time he sees us, and most generally give you a hard time).

Easter I'm going back to my last employer to work parking cars at the beach through summer, with some shop work on other days (ran the whole complex, shop, carpark and hire a few times last year Razz ) and next winter I'm doing labouring work on the premises Very Happy Gotta be better than what I'm doing at present.

Back to the point though, people say supermarket work is ideal for young people... I can only comment on my store, but from my experience, it'll make you really sad and you won't like it Sad I once got to the point where I was hoping for an accident on the way to work, just so I'd get an excuse not to go... I realise that was an awful thing to think now, but that just goes to show how down it got me at one point.

Now I'm just grinning and bearing it, because I can jack it in soon Very Happy Thumbs Up

Good luck with the new job, dude Thumbs Up

Jon

Labouring is pretty good in the summer, did it for a while for a guy down the road from me. Was quite relaxed and still hard work so can't imagine what it would be like full on. Confused

Managers in retail are all cunts, they are more than likely college drop outs who are power happy and think they are the nuts for being manager of a shitty shop on like £25k

General shop work I enjoyed, I wouldn't scrub that off the list. The place I'm going back to is a surf shop, which is good because it's specialised... doesn't get madly busy like something like a newsagent, for example, would. If you go for a shop, try to get something which only caters for one market - sports shop, shoe shop, that kind of thing.

I really love doing the carpark, but that's kind of a random job and doubt if there'd be any near you.

Oh, when I was really small (my first job), I used to help out in a hotel doing room tidying and stuff. I kind of enjoyed that, if you're already working in a hotel and they do close the pool, might be worth having a go. It *can* be OK depending on what you're expected to do... I'd say give it a go, but it isn't for everyone.

Yep Very Happy Thumbs Up

I was one insult away from snapping at the guy who gives me grief once, had it planned in my head waiting for him to say any more. Was something along the lines of "Just because I've GOT a future to look forwards to, and aren't going to be stuck working here for the rest of my life!" Twisted Evil (He was whinging on about how all students are crap workers, how I'm going on report because "(he) Observed you standing around holding your own hand for at least 15 seconds before I intervened and called you for this talk". He'd just dropped a tray of fresh chickens onto my hand Neutral

Makes me so angry, sorry to rattle on, just the first time I've ever actually spoken to anyone about this (parents' aren't very supportive with work stuff, can't really talk with them, and my mates take the piss out of me for shelf stacking enough, couldn't bare to have them ripping the Pee because of the managers treating us like sh*t)

The housekeeping is very hard at my hotel and they get though a lot of staff, i dont think i could do that instead as helped once or twice and really didnt enjoy it at all.

A newsagent wouldnt be so bad i guess, still hard to find though Thumbs Down

One of the managers at comet told me to walk faster so i could get more work done, didn't stay there long. Middle Finger

The only decent job i had was pizza delivery, fucking loved it a really good job. Not good hours, friday saturday and sunday but could still get hamered after, made quite a bit of money and enjoyed ragging the bikes around. Very Happy

When I was your age, I worked at a supermarket for 4 years (ie during six form college and then uni), I also worked at a hotel as a porter. (ie one evening a week and then Saturday)

I realy enjoyed working at the supermarket, to this day (nearly 15 years later), i've still got good friends from there.

Apologies if you already know this - but if you have any kind of accident like that at work, demand to put it in the accident book. Not only is it a legal requirement, it documents the mistake and forces the company to account for it. Bearing that in mind will assist your delinquent supervisor in his efforts to be a little nicer to you......

As it's an industrial injury - it should also entitle you to paid sick leave, even on a pants shelf-stacker's contract.
