I served 4 years an an Airframe Technician in the RAF. I left about 18 months ago.
The RAF as a ground trade is relatively easy to get into, as long as you fit the set criteria, you should have few problems getting in, however, with an air trade, or commission, you need to be an outstanding candidate.
I would still try for pilot or some other air trade, even if you don't get it, you can still go for a ground trade afterwards.
The aircraft engineering trades have just had a huge shake up with some trades joining and becoming one, eg airframes and propulsion are now one trade, and you do a year or two as a flight line mechanic before choosing a trade. A big improvement over the system I joined into in 2000.
Go to your local Armed Forces Careers Office and have a chat. You won't regret it. ____________________ "THOSE WHO RISK NOTHING, DO NOTHING, ACHIEVE NOTHING, BECOME NOTHING." |

Believe me, you won't have time to think about it!
The training really isn't hard, just as long as you get yourself fit first!
It's just a mind game, you are kept bust for 17 days before your first day off, and then, the weekend after, you can go home for a couple of days.
I think the training has gone up to 9 weeks now, it was 7, but then you have trade training. As an engineer, you'll go to RAF Cosford. I was there for 18 months. It's an easy life. You can come and go as you please, go home whenever you want after work. Not hard at all. But the training can be challenging! Inpections are nearly forgotten, you may get the occassional check around your room, but thats it.
Driver training is done alongside the Army, so weekend leave can be restricted, and inspections carry on, but after 9 weeks basic training, inspections won't bother you. At all!!
Get to the Careers office and get on the list. I think most trades have a waiting time now due to the vast amount of advertising so just do it!! ____________________ "THOSE WHO RISK NOTHING, DO NOTHING, ACHIEVE NOTHING, BECOME NOTHING." |

Ive spent four years so far in the RAF, and i have to say it is only as good as you make it.
Living on a base is good, but you'll find it can get very boring at the weekends unless you find some other guys that are willing to stay at the weekends, rather then drive home.
Just remember though, its not so much a job in the RAF, but a completely different lifestyle. There are a lot more restrictions on how you can behave in the forces, but it definantely worth a crack |

Mate of mine at RAF Honnington decorated his room on base in Thomas the Tank Engine stuff, & I mean EVERYTHING: carpets, curtains, wallpaper, bedding, lampshades etc...
Then covered the door in aluminium speedtape & polished it |
