PostPosted: 20:00 - 17 Mar 2006    Post subject: Lump in wrist... Reply with quote

Hi all

Whilst in a staff meeting this morning, I looked down and saw that I have a small (whiteish looking underneath the skin) lump Neutral

When I flex my hand back and forth, (side to side), the lump moves with it...
the lump goes up when I bend my right hand toward my arm, and the lump then moves down when I bend the hand away from my arm
It's about the size of a sultana

Could it be attached to a tendon ?
I don't know how long it has been there

It isn't painful at all, and I wouldn't have known it was there

I haven't banged the wrist to my knowledge

My Fiance was disgusted with it, and urged me to contact the GP asap

Anyone shed any light on this?
The man has made me worry slightly

Thanks in advance
Jo x

A ganglion is a small, harmless cyst, or sac of fluid, that sometimes develops in the wrist. Doctors don't know exactly what causes ganglions, but a ganglion that isn't painful and doesn't interfere with activity can often be left untreated without harm to the patient. However, treatment options are available for painful ganglions or ones that cause problems.

What does a ganglion feel like?

A patient with a dorsal wrist ganglion may feel a bump or mass on the back of the wrist. With a volar wrist ganglion, the bump is felt on the wrist crease below the thumb. The mass may appear suddenly, or it may develop over time. The ganglion may occasionally increase or decrease in size.

The wrist may ache or feel tender. The ganglion may also interfere with activities. A volar wrist ganglion may compress the median or ulnar nerve, causing trouble with sensation and movement. An occult dorsal wrist ganglion may be quite painful and tender, even though it is smaller than other ganglions. Typically the symptoms from a ganglion are not harmful and generally do not grow worse. These cysts will not turn into cancer

If you tell your doctor you want it removing because you don't like the look, he will probably tell you the NHS can't help you. If you tell them it hurts and causes discomfort, then if it's possible to have it removed they will do it Thumbs Up

I have a mark/lump on the back of my hand which I almost got removed. I admitted to my doctor that it didn't really hurt me, but he made me an appointment with a specialist and said as long as I told them it was painful they would do something about it. (in the end I missed my appointment due to going out drinking the night before, and then left it too late to make an another one without getting another referral from my GP, which I have not got around to yet).

Traditionally a bible (hence the nickname "bible cysts" for ganglions on the dorsum of the wrist). Unfortunately after the heavy book treatment they often come back.

so that's what the fuck I've got on my wrist!

I've had it for years, but always forgot to ask the Doctor when I've been in for other things. It always kind of freaked me out, but except for an occasional soreness, it didn't bother me...except it looks really ugly. :/

I have got one that comes and go's.

Had it for about 15 months.
Got to the size of a powerball :o

Than I caught my hand on something and burst it, which hurt for a couple of hours tbh.
It went away.

Then it came back and lasted for 2 months.
Then it went away by itself and has not come back, 6 months.

Didnt hurt, but did feel a bit strange.

Thanks ever so much all Smile xx

It has come up quite quickly (within about a week)
Never noticed anything there before

I will contact the GP on Monday, first thing

Someone I know f rom work said (after I emailed her it could be a ganglion)...
"My mate Tracey had one removed from the back of her hand in Jan"!

Hopefully it is just a cyst
You all put my mind at rest for now

Thanks again

Well... I went to the doctors this evening Neutral
I was in there all of 30 seconds,... I swear

She looked at me (glasses on end of nose)...I swear she sneered at my 'lower class self'

I explained that this lump (now the size of a large nut) had appeared just over a week ago, out of nowhere, on my right wrist

She felt it for all of 5 seconds

"It's nothing"

"OH..it just worried me that it came up so suddenly"

"No..it is nothing"

"Erm... oh, I thought it may be a cyst or something. it feels spongy, like it is filled with something. A bit odd, don't you think"?

"No. It is nothing DEAR"
No explanation..nothing
Then she stared at me. As if I was taking her time and I was stupid or something

I got back home and thought..but surely it IS something. I can see it

I called Fiance and he s aid "So we are imagining it is there then ??

Oh, and the quack said to me as I walked out "If it hurts...come back "

If WHAT hurts ?
There is nothing there !!

GPs know nothing but you wont get to see a specialist.

it probably is nothing tho. just dont expect an explanation of what type of nothing you have.

i had a funny swelling on my wrist on the vein several years ago but it went away when i stopped wearing a watch

Yup.

Sounds about right.
Its only a cosmetic issue atm.

So it not even worth referring to the specialist.
Waste of money and time.

Got to say its impeding your work, as you type and causes discomfort. They will then most likely give you a referal.

Said that, they do go away on their own after a while.
& if you get it removed there is a high chance it will come back anyway. So Docotors don't want to watse NHS cash on such a pointless excercise.

I have one too, I had it removed when I had my wrists operated on but it came back so i just put up with it now. It doesnt hurt and you cant really see it. My mother suffers with them and hers are very painful and she has 2 operations to remove hers as they were affecting her movement. Guess everyones different.

Theres just some things that should remain to yourself Wink

If the lump is a cyst, then there is no reason for it to return again, and again and again. The cause for the lump needs to be treated rather than the lump itself Thumbs Up
