Might be worth taking a bit of cardboard box to put under the ratchet strap to stop it marking the saddle. I usually keep a bungee handy to tie the front brake on with to stop the bike rolling forwards.
Most of the major ferries are well clued-up. You should see how many tie-downs they use on the Aberdeen-Lerwick ferry!
Some of the smaller ferry companies (especially in the North of Scotland) are a bit less well equipped. Noteably the one from Lochailne to the Isle of Mull where you can either sit on it for 45 minutes or put it on the stand and take your chance or the Mallaig to Skye one where you are given a four foot length of blue rope and left to cobble something together.
The only one I ever saw a bike go over on was the Glenelg ferry to Skye. It has a rotating deck, the guy pushed it too hard one time and had all six bikes on their side (on top of the riders) when it hit the bump-stop. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
