i had a bike do this once
it's either get the gearbox stripped down
or get used to pushing the gear lever back again
i was tight and rode around for six months and got totally used to it not returning
it was a bit of a problem when i got a new bike
i set off, changed up into 2nd and then promptly whacked it back down into neutral with a big rev Embarassed
it took me about a week to stop doing it Laughing

Both. It's simply a spring somewhere and that somewhere is usually inside the gearbox.

Some bikes (noteably some Kawasakis) have the selector and return spring arrangement under a seperate cover. This makes life much easier but it is still full of oil and requires that a gasket be replaced.

It is always helpful if you state the make and model of the bike when asking a technical query. For example, this is a well known fault on MZ 2-strokes which people usually bodge/fix by attaching a bungee to the gear lever.

May be less of a problem if the gear lever is not attached directly to the shaft on the gearbox, in which case stripping the various bits of linkage and cleaning them up might help.

Yep, this happens a lot if you ride in winter as dirt builds up in the linkages. My SV is particularly prone to it. Just a case of taking the linkage off the selector shaft as Finpos above describes.

It's not usually gearbox problems - relax Wink
