The last one I did I charged a grand, but that was around 90 pages.

Five simple pages shouldn't cost you more than around £250, maybe £100 if you're lucky. Get a mate to do it for free, it wouldn't take longer than a couple of hours.

If you pay a company to sort a domain and hosting you'll pay a lot more. You can do that bit yourself for free.

Decide your hourly rate and determine the work involved, it's the same as anything else. If you feel you can produce a premium product then your price should reflect that.

Commercially we'd charge about £2500 based on 5 days work.

Number of pages has nothing to do with it really, more a case of how professional it needs to look and how many distinctly different page layouts need to be designed and built.

Not really true, but also has a point. costing on pages alone is not very accurate. You need to cost on various things then add together.

for example:

Design + templating charged at day rate of £500
2 content page templates + 1 homepage design (2 days) = £1000
2 Templates + 1 homepage build (2 days) = £1000

Content migration charged at day rate of £250
20 page content migration (3 days) = £750

Total = £2750

(this does not include an IA, wireframing or other chargable extras)

If it helps, I'd do a 'static' website, like a shop front type for £250-£500 and an 'active install' one (Joomla or summat) for £750+.

But I just can't be arsed having to explain the prices to anyone to be honest. I've recently been asked to do 2 for two separate people, who are mates so I've not made the price massive, and they both baulked at the price. I told them how long it would take and what my spare time is worth and so on, but I was thinking all the while - why am I bothering... So I've come to the conclusion that I'm not really interested in it any more. I was only tooling about in my spare time, granted, but the hassle over the price to me seemed too much to be doing.

If you supply ALL of the content and can wait a month (pc has died and im busy at the mo)
I will be able to do it, with hosting (my server) at a good rate.
Let me know your cheapest quote and ill see what i can do.

say 15 - 20 quid an hour meaning your bog standard for site with say 5 pages will cost like 300- 400. Use your own logic if its easy and and a static site and for a mate 100 - 200.

Until you specific and wire frame or a content plan its impossible to estimate an accurate price.

The site will be approx 5 pages, for a hair and beauty company, pretty simple pages, one of them being a contact form

Also do you sign up for the domain and the hosting yourself, and then add that to their cost? or let the client sort out the hosting etc?

Karma for any help Thumbs Up

£250 sounds reasonably, possibly discount based on that if they are friends

If its a one off sign up a hosting account from a reputable company in there name, you dont need the hastle of them holding you responsable if the site goes down.

I use 1 and 1 hosting and Domain reg, i like having both hosting and the domain in one location. Cant be asked to piss about if something goes wrong having to call up 2 different companies like a yoyo.

Still quite limited but i do see what you want, someone who is good can put something nicely together 1 - 2 days. If that was for my good mate I wouldn't even charge them, for a friend of a friend 100-200.
