Girl, 7, in fatal quad bike crash
A seven-year-old girl died after her quad bike was involved in a head-on collision with a Range Rover in Essex.
The crash occurred in Fingrith Hall Lane, just outside the village of Blackmore, on Wednesday evening.

The girl, who lived locally, was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, where she later died from her injuries.

A 28-year-old woman who was driving the Range Rover was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

The woman, from the Brentwood area, has been bailed until New Year's Eve.

Anyone who witnessed the crash between the Shark quad bike and the red Range Rover, which occurred at about 1900 GMT, is asked to contact Essex Police.

Terrible Sad .

If the woman was drunk/drugged up then I hope she gets the maximum sentence allowed for her crime! Somehow it also doesn't surprise me that it was a 4x4 of some kind...

Playing devil's advocate, she may have been perfectly fit to drive after smoking a spliff. WTF was a 7 year old girl doing on a quad in the road in the first place? Who's to say the girl didn't go into the Range Rover's lane completely causing the accident. The woman driver just happened to have been drinking but driving perfectly safely.

yes the seven year old shouldnt have been on the road on a quad, but to be honest the same accident could have happened if she was on a bicycle.

I think the no lights would have been a problem either way. I doubt the quad had lights, but i dont know.

I also think that parents shouldnt have allowed a kid of that age out on a quad (or a bicycle ) after dark.

I dont know what happened, or how over the limit the range rover driver was, but I think it wd be a shame if they took a big punishment, when other people could have prevented the situation.

Ideally, we should all be able to stop faced with any hazard in the road, and if we cant, we arent driving safely, but I doubt she was that unusual.

What the hell was a 7yr old doing riding on the road on a quad in the first place?

I doubt very much the quad will have been very big nor have had ANY lights on if it's designed for kids.

Fair enough if the woman was over the limit, but would you even SEE a child on a quad in the dark??

Said on mid-day R4 news that it was a public road.
I feel for her parents but why the hell was she on a road at night?

Good point, it's something that I didn't actually consider. The parents of the child are definitely not blameless, and I'm sure they will live with their guilt for the rest of their lives.

I guess we will never know but if the woman had been in a fit state to drive, the accident might have been avoided.

From "Times Online"
"The 28 year-old Range Rover driver, from Brentwood, Essex, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink or drugs. She was released on bail until next Monday.

A family friend, who was in the car with the girl's father, said: "We were in the car with the children’s dad and they were following us behind.

"They had come to pick us up and we’d only gone 200 yards when it happened. I was watching them, keeping an eye on them. They both had lights on their bikes.

"I don’t really know what happened, I told the two police officers."

The girl's brother was unharmed, the friend said. "He’s okay but very shaken up. We are very upset by it, it’s so awful.""

It's on the news now. The road is a narrow, unlit country lane and the driver has been released without charge on bail.

Couple of years ago my mate brought his kid a minimoto. Fortunatly the police siezed it before the kid got killed. My mate is not the brightest of people and could not see what was wrong with a nine year old kid riding on quiet roads.

at the same time, i dont think the driver is blameless, if the bikes had lights

i think a non-custodial sentence like a ban might be reasonable

im not quite sure what on bail with no charge means, but i hope she is gonna be charged with something

Why would you hope that Colin?
She has not been charged with driving under the influence, ie she was not under the influence. She will be on bail whilst the police investigate, I think this is normal for the driver of any vehicle in a fatal accident.
The other vehicle, the one the driver/rider who was killed in was...
Driven by an unlicensed driver.
Driven by an uninsured driver
Driven by an underage driver
( You can possibly bung in...Without tax and not displaying L plates. not driving with due care and attention (what 7 year old has C&A?))
On top of this it was all done with the consent and collusion of the driver's parent.
I know who I want in court.

They say either drink or drugs....

Aren't the drugs test's where they make you perform tasks like counting backwards while touching your nose, balanced on one leg etc?

If so, surely after you have just crashed and possibly killed someone, even a person who hasn't taken anything would have trouble doing these things?

Can I just say AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!

Quads are not bikes FFS. Rolling Eyes

Still more to come on this strory I suspect but have to agree that whatever the state of the woman (and if she was over the limit or DWDC she should be prosecuted accordingly) the kid should not have been on the road on this vehicle.

If you are buying your kid a quad then it is your responsibility to ensure that they have somewhere safe and legal to play with it. I really feel for the parents as they have lost a chilld but if any blame is to be attached they are the ones who deserve it.

Do you remember Leah Betts?
Girl who died from medical miss treatment following taking MDMA.
https://ecstasy.org/info/dangers.html
Her parents turned into victim /martyrs and campaigned against ecstasy. I had a confrontation with them in a bookshop, They were trying to get all the drug related magazines removed. These magazines had the kind of information in them that could have saved Leah.
The Victim/parent is often focused on the wrong cause. I bet these clowns will blame everyone else except themselves for what happened.

Oh dear. Parents need a reality check, letting a kid on such a thing in the dark, what if it was of us who never saw her? Can't see how the 4X4 Driver is at fault. Confused

I am not advocating the use of MDMA or any other drug BTW. I was using the Betts case as an example of how easy it is to focus on the wrong thing in these cases to absolve the parents of blame.

I recall Leah, I recall that we had an assembly where the headmaster attempted to tell us the evils of esctasy.

Unfortunately this had a side effect of people taking it to try it, which probably explains the rash of teen pregnancies about 9-10 months later at the school I attended.

To the WTF was she doing on the road comments.

90% of the roads around me do not have pavements or street lights, 'tis the nature of country roads. Surprisingly people do go out after dark and therefore you do what you can to be visible but you have to rely on the road users to have a bit of common sense. This could have been a child on a pushbike or in a pram, or your mom walking back from the shop, doesn't matter what, the driver was either driving too fast for the conditions, not paying attention, or both. 'Things' do not appear out of nowhere, you just weren't observant.
