And here was me thinking that the CG really was indestructible Crying or Very sad

https://bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=71934

I put my foot on the little bit of metal sticking out (as usual) and then as I tried to put the full weight of the bike on to the stand it just bent and snapped Sad

Is it a quick welding job? It's staying up right outside of my house using it's mirror at the moment. Thumbs Up

TBH mate it would be cheaper to just uy one unless you know someone with a welder - as it has rusted so much the metal is probably thin all over and you'll just end up blowing and chasing holes in it. Reckon you could tie something substantial to the side of it for the time being to make a splint. Im thinking scrap metal/broom handle and loads of hose clips Surprised

£50?!?! Shocked no thanks Confused

A splint is a good idea... I'll go found out how much it costs to weld a splint to it Laughing

In the mean time, any other suggestions? I didn't even realise it was rusty it's always covered in so much mud. I've been through many country lanes recently.

Thank you kind sir for your informative and considerate input Razz

I was under the impression that all of the dirt and oil that had accumulated was actually protecting the metal from rust anyway Rolling Eyes

Could drill a hole each side of the rust area and screw a piece of steel to it, bridge the gap. That would do short term.

I'm liking the splint ideas Thumbs Up I don't think I have a drill at the moment but am sure to have many friends that do.

I could weld (get someone else to weld) or use a drill and screws to get long bits of steel all the way around really, couldn't I? It'll be all Frankenstein and cool!

Welding is OK...so long as the rust isn't widespread...and the steel isn't as thin as I suspect it might be in view of that rust hole appearing. Could end up with half the stand just going up in smoke if it's seriously corroded. I've had that happen many times with exhausts Confused Laughing

If you go the screw on route, yep, at least two bits (one each side) would be ideal.

Could you bend the good side of the stand to make it stick out and use it as a side stand?

That stand is rusted to oblivion.

You need a new one.

Ahaha, that exact thing happened to mine. I arc welded it with my crappy welder and it failed again when I got angry and kind of kicked it.

I don't think that's a very good solution... I'd have a bent and even more broken center stand as a side stand on the wrong side of the bike (I think?) and it would need to be a bit longer anyway.

It's not that bad!! Sad Crying or Very sad

The metal on the other side is still quite thick, it's certainly not moving anywhere. I think long steel (thickish sheet steel?) and welding is the first avenue forward in my humble opinion Razz I'll see what the kind mechanic says tomorrow. I can get him to see why my alternator still isn't charging at the same time.

I take it you've bought a new center stand since?

Cut the stand where is has gone rotten.
find a piece of tube to fit inside, weld that to the remaining part of the stand, but with a bit of it potruding.
then you can weld the bit you cut off to the new metal that is sticking out.

hope that makes sense? Smile

It's rotted mate you can weld it but it'll fail again. If it happens when your bike is parked next to another you might have a few quid to pay out.

TBH I'd remove it and ask some clever git with a welder and tube to copy it. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two.

The very end is fine though, so I'd rather the clever git use some extra metal to weld the two bits together, because I want the bottom bit to stay like a CG.

Yes, makes sense pepperami. I think this would be a good route to take if I can find someone enthusiastic enough to take it on!

You're right though Pete. I'm just being hopelessly optimistic Sad I shouldn't really risk any incidents with other bikes.

The question is, will a 1999 side stand fit on to a 2004 CG which never even had a side stand? Otherwise, for £5 I would certainly do it.
