When checking valve clearances on i.e. a 600cc IL4 do you NEED to remove the cam chain tensioner?

Haynes says you should, service manual says you should... I can't really see why? Is there play in the camshaft bearings that makes the gap smaller when the cam chain tension is applied?

I would have thought it would be best to leave the chain under tension so it doesnt slip a tooth when being checked (obviously not applicable if you need to change a shim etc).

What do you all do?

CCT would not affect the valve clearances.
