Hi

Advantages
- more thrust (and so acceleration) in any particular gear

Disadvantages
- probably worse fuel consumption
- probably lower top speed
- marginally increased chain and sprocket wear (unlikely to be noticeable, and most probably wreck their chains long before it is an issue)
- lower speed in each gear, so you have to change up earlier losing the advantage of running lower gearing

If you want it to just be more sprightly when cruising then just cruise in a lower gear.

All the best

Keith
