Didn't quite go according to plan...

https://www.apholt.net/photos/Spain2006/FreshAL_Crash3_small.jpg

Fortuantly, no-one was hurt. The bike was being towed on a trailer. The car towing the trailer failed to make a bend, span and smashed into the crash barriers at about 50mph. The trailer was destroyed, and so was my bike.

No, I wasn't driving the car! My mate Rob was, and his bike was totalled as well.

The rest of the holiday was great though, kayaking, snowboarding, canyoning Thumbs Up

Insurance is proving a pain in the arse, so until it's all sorted I'm borrowing this beauty

1988 XL500R - first bike I've ever kick-started, and it's 500cc! Great fun.

So, anyone got a SV (or similar) going cheap?

sorry to here about the bike
im glad no one was on it when it got smashed up

trailers are tricky things

some of the founder members of this site were involved in a nasty accident involving a trailer

insurance on that one is gonna be wierd, as the bike was cargo at the time

it just shows that cars may be safer than bikes, but bikes are safer than trailers Smile

We drove down to Spain with bikes, kayaks and snow sports kit. We were tagging along on a kayaking holiday my girlfriend was going on.

Bummer. At least nobody got hurt though.

I'd have thought insurance would be tricky in that situation, I take it the car was fully comp and that's what you're claiming from?

Both me and the car are fully comp. They are fighting between them as to who has to pay.

So far I've dealt with 2 insurance companies, 2 claim handling centres, 2 lots of solicitors, 2 bike hire firms and the RAC and not one of them has had a single clue between them.

Sorry to have to break it to you.

But..it may well be neither.

Your car policy may well cover contents and perhaps that would cover a small loss, but the small print will very likely state it does not cover this.

Your bike policy is probably not in force when your bike is in transit.

I personally would say you ought to be claiming on your fully comp bike insurance. Fully comp covers damage you do to your bike through your own accidents, be it dropping a ladder on it in your garage, or it falling over in the back of a van, or off a trailer. Unless your small print in your motorcycle policy says no cover is offered in the event of damage occuring during transit of the vehicle or word to that effect, they have to pay out.

Don't go getting confident until you've tried starting it when it is red hot (eg when you stall in slow moving traffic). They are a bastard!

I was always told that 4 stroke were nasty to start when hot, luckily no one told my DR600 that - a couple of times I was just pushing down on the kicker to position it around TDC and it started with out me trying - while it took some serious kicking when cold!
(Though, saying that I also had some fun restarting it when hot, but that seemed to be more to do with having my helmet on - as soon as I took it off, it'd start. But then stall when I went to put it back on undoubtably Smile.)

I'd just try and blag keeping the XL; should be a good commuting bike and you can go and get dirty as well Smile.

Incidentally, I am selling my TRX, though it does need some work doing; still runs at the mo, but will need cam chain sorting soon. If you're interested, I can get you details - I suspect even paying a garage for a work would come out a fair bit cheaper than most of the SVs I've seen on the market (and I /so/ prefer the power delivery, but I'm sure everyone knows my opinions of SVs Smile ).
