Maybe time to get good at spannering?

If you reckon the bike is scrap. Doesn't cost anything to take the engine out and split it. You can decide at that point if you feel capable to put it back together again.

If you do, worst case, you've wasted a load of time, a new/second hand output shaft, an oil seal and a squirt of gasket sealant.

I can't believe I'm reading a thread on BCF of people requesting pictures of shafts Laughing

Maybe I'm being clueless or skipped a lot of posts.... but if that shaft is on a table... is your engine already apart, and if it is, why aren't you simply going to be replacing it?

am i missing somethinhg here?
It doesnt look bad at all. I was expecting a wiped shaft (lol? Pathetic...)
reuse it and tell your mechanic hes trying to take you for a ride. If you sudddenly lose all power with the engine still going, then it has become a problem. Until then, leave it.

Friend just got back to me he has Mig welder not Arc. What do i need to take off besides the cover to put spot welds onto the socket/shaft? Confused

mig would probably work better.
A small slug across each spline will get enough meat to be filed down. Let it cool for a while after a few. Saves the seal then

Use a good welder and someone good with it. Ie: qualified. Not just your mate whos had a few goes blasting holes in some steel plate.

How about a large woodruff key or two in addition to the existing splines?
Might be easier to cut a slot or two in the shaft / sprocket and pop the key in.

Depending on how bad it is you may be able to braze it on. At least then you can get it off again without a saw.

But If the threads are well and truly fooked, it probably wouldnt be strong enough.

Brazing would put a lot more heat into the shaft, and wreck the seal.

Welding may or may not work. The best way to fix it would be to buy Paddy Blake's shaft, give it a good polish and fit that Wink

Well decided to have a look and took pictures. It appears the front sprocket retainer thing has been put on wrong by last owner last so rather than lining it up properly with the sprocket holes they must of forced it on over the splines then bolted it down resulting in wearing the splines out. The Sprocket itself fits nicely if pushed back but since the retainer is loose due to no splines the sprocket soon moves out and wobbles around by 2-4mm. So could I take the retainer off put a weld around it then bolt it back over or can you get some sort of sprocket washers?

There isn't much wrong with that.Maybe try putting an extra retainer on.
New retainers as they wear out easy enough.

The retainer is not ment to line up and part of the shaft should have no splines.

Nothing wrong with that shaft, unless it's a different story under the sprocket. Pull the sprocket and take another photo.

The retainer is fairly toothless so will try buying 2x new when Wemoto get some back in stock and see if they will fit on tighter. Wink

The retainer doesn't fit tight in the slot, it's not supposed to. It has the same spline pattern as the sprocket, but when you slide it on the teeth fall into the groove and you rotate it so that the teeth on the retainer line up with the teeth on the shaft, preventing the sprocket from sliding off the end. The sprocket will still have some movement in it but it can't fall off.

From the pictures there is no reason why you should not just fit a new retainer (or pair of them since the slot is worn) and keep on riding.

Just ordered 2 sprocket retainers from David Silvers so will try that first. May take the sprocket off and give the shaft a clean with brake cleaner to see what damage is under the sprocket if any as well.

If the shaft under the sprocket is damaged enough to be a problem then you won't need brake cleaner to see it. As long as the sprocket has enough spline to stop it spinning on the shaft it's fine.

Pete and Paddy are right, you may need a pair of retainers now but there's no real drama. The sprocket doesn't need to be pressed hard up against the crankcase, a small amount of movement on the shaft is ok, so don't go panicking again there. More than 99% of the force pulling the sprocket towards the back wheel, only a tiny amount is trying to make the sprocket slide on its shaft. This is why retainers are always quite flimsy little affairs.

Do take the sprocket off and take some more pics to satisfy the BCF curiosity, but when you put it back together smear some grease on the shaft. As said, a small amount of axial play is expected, Normally the whole area is covered in oily greasy crap from chain lube building up such, so the sprocket is always lubed on the shaft. If it's all been cleaned up then you have dryness.

Something else that I've though of, that's redundant now this is more or less sorted. We were talking about building up the shaft with weld, which carries the inherent danger of damaging the shaft or the seal behind it. It would be far more sensible to build up the sprocket splines with weld or braze, seeing as you can get it as hot as you like.

Make sure you grease the splines when you fit the sprocket retainers. Heavy wear isn't caused by movement, it's caused by the grinding action of particles between the shaft and the sprocket. Greasing the shaft will reduce friction and the production of those metal particles.

There was nowt wrong with those splines.

Only problem was the retainer gap which you have sorted. Sounds like the garage was trying to extract money from you.

Splines look ok, bit worn that's all.

Loctite those bolts or they will fall out. Either that or put some flat washers under the lugs of the retainer they pass through. I take it the reason you are not lining both retainers up is because the groove is too thin for both?

You DID grease the shaft, right?

Well just took the sprocket bolts out since forgot to put thread lock on them yesterday but did use copper slip on the shaft since dont have any axel grease then put it all back together then took it for an 8 mile test ride.

All I can say is BLIMY it must have been like that for a while! There’s no more crunchy gear changes no more jerky acceleration through the gears. It was almost like a new bike.
