| I've been filtering full time for 40 years now. I know how many miles per year I have done in all that time and it's around 600,000 miles.
About a 10th of that is filtering in London or on A roads and motorways, so about 60,000 miles of weaving between car, lorries and nowadays, headphone wearing peds, cyclists and electric scooters.
I move over for a lot of bikes to let them pass, including ones with L plates when I am filtering so I don't hold them up, I am in it for the long game. I have seen a fair amount of silly motorcycle filtering and mostly they get away with it, but some you can see it's only a matter of time.
Flying down at speed between two lines of slow moving or stand still vehicles works until one of them changes lanes with no warning, there is no possibility of stopping or slowing enough to avoid this if it happens at the speeds I see. Most 4 wheel vehicles indicate and hesitate for ages before changing lanes, but I am sure everyone has seen the super confident driver who flicks the car sideways into another lane with no warning at all. If you're filtering a bit more carefully you'll either stop in time or just get knocked over relatively gently.
It is rare to see a bike get side swiped (I started before youtube existed), but I have seen this a few times, it can be quite spectacular. I suspect these people are the ones who give motorcycling up as a dangerous pursuit afterwards or who harp on about wearing all the gear all the time to those that don't dress for falling off.
My three main memories of bikes copping an unfortunate one are:-
1/ Learner on a 125 Chinese custom choppery bike with the widest crash bars in the world hitting the rear bumper of a stationary car with one of the crash bars bring him to a sudden stop. Bits of bike and rear bumper everywhere.
2/ A Ducati Monster flying past me on Aspen Way, rider wearing a sports bag with the small handles wedged over his shoulders/arms. Traffic was crawling along in all three lanes as usual. A very expensive looking sports car just switched lanes without looking or indicating, hitting the bike and sending it across the road. The rider was fine, I think the bag on his back helped with his landing, but I recall he no longer had any footrests or their mounting points on one side of the bike. The car looked less expensive with the Monster print in the door and side
3/ I was passed by what must have been the most accessorised BMW GS in the world on the A13 near Barking in about 2015. The rider looked magnificent, chest out, arms wide, towering above the cars he was flashing down the middle of, he looked unstoppable. I caught up with him as some car drivers were propping him up against the railings of one of the old flyovers, the BMW was scattered over a few lanes. He was struggling to breathe and crying with pain as he had taken a heavy blow to his chest and ribs. I called an ambulance and when the old bill turned up they sent me and the others who had stopped on our way as we hadn't witnessed the actual collision. I always wondered how he got on. ____________________ Blackmail is a nasty word........but not as nasty as phlegm!

As I always say: motorcycle helmets are not mandated for safety it's to conceal how smug the rider is while filtering ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Reading between the lines, it seems that Amy was Pumped and Dumped by a chap who rides a motorcycle.
That's all what's wrong with her. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |

I don't get this: "it's dangerous!" For whom?
Go nuts on a bike and 9 times out of 10 it's the rider that's killed or quadrospazzed. AFAIK the number of people killed by bikes that were neither rider nor pillion (i.e. a pedestrian, cyclist, in a car etc.) are almost non-existent, judging from:
https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/reported-road-casualties-great-britain-motorcyclist-factsheet-2020/reported-road-casualties-in-great-britain-motorcycle-factsheet-2020
I won't even bother pulling the stats on the number of non-driver deaths due to drink or drug driving, I think you get my point. ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |
