7000RPM @ 60MPH?

Is it normal for a 250cc bike to have such high revs?

Which 250cc do you mean, most 250cc 4 stroke engines will struggle to reach much over 70mph and if they do you are practically abusing them holding it for long.
Different engine types and tuning might give most power lower down where it is more useful at legal speeds.

If you're talking about the strom in your sig, then it can't officially top 90mph full whack to start with.

So yeah, while 7k isn't exactly screaming anyway (for a bike engine, cars are different) the 60mph you reference is over 2/3 of it's "good day" capability...

Well, the redline is what 10,500? So it's not absolutely spanking it. For reference my VFR750 has a redline at 11500 and at 7k it's barely into the power, maybe 100mph in top, you'd probably downshift one or two gears for a spirited overtake.

Some of the older inline 4 250s from the 90s' would probably be chugging and kangarooing if you let the revs drop as low as 7,000.

They aren't like cars. The redline is where you have to upshift, not an indicator your engine is about to blow up.

Just got back from the MOT on the 250 scooty and had a flit aboot to celebrate.
I went on the M32 to test out the recently fitted tacho as I was curious about the revs the thing cruises at compared to peak torque revs
to guestimate its most economical cruising speed
and guess what? 70mph @ 7000 rpm ( ish)

Seemed normal for a 250 to me,
I recall the old CX500 would do 70 ish @ 6,000 ish
and even that felt busy but I was comparing it to a deisel car which
would do 70 @2250ish rpm

Yes, this 250cc does feel rather busy at 7000rpm doing 60mph. I think I'll stick to this speed as max, don;t want to overburden this small engine. Besides, If I need to get somewhere, I'll just plan ahead.

Fuck sake.

It will do 70 with no risk of damage to the engine. Of course it sounds busy, it has a small fucking engine so needs to spin fast enough to create the power to do that speeed.

my old CB250RS did 10mph per 1000 revs in top

so 60mph was 6000rpm

quite handy if the speedo or tacho cable had broken

my little 400 does just under 1k/10mph...70mph is about 6700rpm in 6th gear.
it'll do 14k if I forget to upshift before.

Rev it son, my Varadero 125 used to sit at the rev limit 80 miles a day, absolutely 100% at the limiter killing it every single day for 2 years.

Engine was fine at 77,000 miles when I traded it. Just service it properly.

Not spanking its arse enough is probably why it had emulsified oil. Not getting it hot enough to drive off the condensation.
